Culture critic Nelson George asserts that, along with Miguel, Ocean has "staked out basis where [he is] not competing with those striking-driven [commercial R&B] acts" and is "cultivating a sound that balances adult concerns with a sense of young men trying to understand their own desires (an apt description of Ocean, specially)."[140] Writing for Insider, Callie Ahlgrim said that Body of water "changed our very understanding of modern music", and that he discusses themes like youth, innocence, lost love, loneliness, desire, and mortality in his music in a way that "feels fresh and extraordinary [and] makes the introspective sound universal and transcendent [which] is why he's one of the defining artists of our time."[136] Jacob Shamsian of Business organisation Insider said that Bounding main "isn't just i of the most important artists in pop, he's ane of the nigh of import artists in all of music."[141] In a GQ commodity titled "Why Frank Ocean is a musical icon", Jon Savage described Bounding main as "ane of the pop aristocracy", a "true pop star of today", and a "consummate contemporary creative person in every sense who is immersed in new sonic possibilities, one who is deeply committed to creative exploration in the most profound sense." Cruel praised Ocean for taking R&B to a "new level [through] constructing startling audio pictures that fit his lyrics."[132] Pitchfork regarded Bounding main as a "master of confessional songwriting, earning a cult-icon condition with his enigmatic persona and idiosyncratic approach to popular."[142]

Photography [edit]

On August 20, 2016, Body of water released a 360-folio magazine, Boys Don't Cry, alongside his second album Blonde.[143] The fashion and machine-themed publication contains the photo projects from Wolfgang Tillmans, Viviane Sassen, Tyrone Lebon, Ren Hang, Harley Weir, Michael Mayren and Ocean himself.[144] Four months later, British magazine Impress published another photowork from Frank Ocean.[145]

On May 1, 2017, Ocean attended annual Met Gala as a special photographer for Vogue.[146] On October 23, 2017, he made two covers and a visual essay for British way mag, i-D.[147]

Sea's younger blood brother, Ryan Breaux, was killed in a car crash on August ii, 2020, at the age of xviii.[148]

Sexual orientation [edit]

Ocean wrote an open letter, initially intended for the liner notes on Channel Orange, that preemptively addressed speculation about his attraction in the by to some other human.[149] Instead, on July 4, 2012, he published the open up letter of the alphabet on his Tumblr blog[150] [151] recounting unrequited feelings he had for another young man when he was 19 years sometime, citing it as his starting time true love.[150] He used the blog to give thanks the man for his influence, and also thanked his mother and other friends, maxim, "I don't know what happens now, and that'due south alright. [...] Your determination to go public about your sexual orientation gives promise and low-cal to then many young people nevertheless living in fear."[157] When asked if he considers himself bisexual in a 2012 interview, Ocean stated: "I'll respectfully say that life is dynamic and comes forth with dynamic experiences, and the same sentiment that I accept towards genres of music, I have towards a lot of labels and boxes and shit."[158]

In June 2016, following the Orlando nightclub shooting that killed 49 people, Ocean published an essay expressing his sadness and frustration.[159] He mentioned that his first experience with homophobia and transphobia was with his begetter when he was 6 years old, and related how many people pass on their hateful values to the adjacent generation and ship thousands of people down suicidal paths.[159] In 2017, Bounding main's father subsequently sued him for defamation and requested $14.5 one thousand thousand.[160] On October 17, 2017, later a hearing that saw Ocean and both of his parents taking the stand, the presiding estimate ruled in favor of Ocean, stating that his begetter had not provided sufficient show of defamation.[161]

Legal controversies [edit]

Ocean sampled the music from the Eagles' song "Hotel California" on the vocal "American Wedding" from Nostalgia, Ultra. When asked well-nigh it, Ocean said that Eagles ring member Don Henley was, "patently intimidated by my rendition of 'Hotel California'. He threatened to sue if I perform it over again." In response to Bounding main's comments, the Eagles' legal representative released a statement: "Frank Ocean did not but 'sample' a portion of the Eagles' 'Hotel California,' he took the entire master rail, plus the song's existing melody, and replaced the lyrics with his own; this is not creative, permit alone 'intimidating.' It'south illegal. For the record, Don Henley has not threatened or instituted whatsoever legal action against Frank Ocean, although the Eagles are now considering whether they should."[165] [166] Chris Richards of The Washington Mail remarked that "certain boomers don't similar Ocean equally much" equally "information-historic period babies" due to the controversy.[167]

On January 27, 2013, Sea was involved in a physical altercation with Chris Brown. Bounding main alleged that Brown attacked him after he refused to milk shake his hand during a parking dispute, Body of water farther alleged that he heard someone in Brown's entourage call him a "faggot", and that Brown threatened to shoot him.[168] Ocean declined to press charges.[168] Dark-brown later was sued past a different individual in Bounding main'due south campsite for assault and battery stemming from the incident.[169] [170]

On March 7, 2014, Sea was sued by Chipotle Mexican Grill for them to recoup the money they paid him in advance for a commercial that he backed out of considering he objected to cloth in the advertisement. The advertisement was to feature Ocean singing the song "Pure Imagination", and was to promote sustainable farming. Ocean backed out of the spot when Chipotle refused to remove their logo and name from the advertizing.[171] [172] The lawsuit was dropped on March xx after Ocean paid the advance back in full.[173] The commercial, titled The Scarecrow, was ultimately released with Fiona Apple performing the song.[174]
